Dentata Charta Policy on Violence and Aggression

  1. Purpose
    This policy aims to safeguard all individuals working within our practice from potential harm arising from violent or aggressive behavior. It also ensures that we meet our obligation to provide a secure and safe working environment.

  2. Philosophy
    We maintain a zero-tolerance stance towards any form of violence, regardless of the motive or context.

  3. Responsibilities
    Every team member is responsible for ensuring their own safety and that of others by acting responsibly and considering how their actions or inactions might impact others in the workplace.

  4. Scope
    This policy applies to all individuals associated with the practice, including self-employed contractors (e.g., associates), temporary and casual workers.

  5. Oversight
    The implementation and enforcement of this policy fall under the purview of Lavinia Swann-Auger, Practice Manager.

  6. Definition
    For the purposes of this policy, violence and aggression are defined as:

    • Physical assaults, whether actual or threatened

    • Psychological abuse

    • Verbal abuse, including shouting, swearing, and hostile gestures

    • Threats directed at practice personnel within the workplace

  7. Workplace Definition
    The term "workplace" encompasses practice premises and any other locations where work duties are performed. This also includes travel to and from the workplace.

  8. Policy Compliance
    To ensure adherence to this policy, we will:

    • Conduct regular risk assessments

    • Secure practice premises

    • Install and weekly check a panic button at the reception desk

    • Provide ongoing training in managing difficult or aggressive patients

    • Offer training on handling physical assaults

    • Cover taxi costs for staff required to remain on-site after 9 pm, when necessary

    • Equip staff visiting patients at home with personal alarms

    • Implement an efficient appointment system to reduce delays and stress in the reception area

    • Establish a protocol for out-of-hours emergencies, including call logging

  9. Incident Reporting
    All incidents, regardless of severity, must be reported immediately to Lavinia Swann-Auger, Practice Manager, and documented using the appropriate forms. In cases of actual or threatened violence, the police will be notified. Injuries must be recorded in the accident book.

  10. Support and Assistance
    We are committed to providing support, assistance, and counseling to any team member who experiences violence or aggression in the course of their work. Where appropriate, discretionary paid sick leave may be granted.
